The setup
Mississippi State is hosting at Dudy Noble Field for the first time in several years and the Bulldogs are at home at 40-17. Brian O'Connor's first season as head coach delivered a No. 14 overall seed, an immediate vindication of the bold June 2025 hire that brought him from Virginia to replace the fired Chris Lemonis. State is back to where it was before the 2021 national championship.
Dudy Noble Field is one of the legendary atmospheres in college baseball. The Left Field Lounge, the cowbells, the SEC weekend crowd that has packed the place for decades. Hosting regionals at Dudy Noble is a Starkville tradition, and the 2026 version is going to be loud.
Cincinnati at 37-20 is a Big 12 two seed in their second season in the conference. Louisiana at 39-23 brings Sun Belt pedigree and a head coach in Matt Deggs who knows how to win this format. Lipscomb at 29-24 claimed the ASUN auto bid with a tournament run.
The teams
Mississippi State
Brian O'Connor's first season at Mississippi State after 22 years at Virginia. O'Connor took the Cavaliers to seven College World Series and won the 2015 national title before Mississippi State hired him in June 2025 to replace the fired Chris Lemonis. A No. 14 overall seed and a hosting weekend in his debut season say everything about what he has built since arriving.
Cincinnati
Jordan Bischel's third season as Cincinnati's head coach produced an NCAA Tournament return. Bischel agreed to a contract extension through 2031 last August. The Bearcats have the kind of pitching depth that travels and a roster that handled a tougher schedule than their previous conference allowed.
Louisiana
Matt Deggs has Louisiana in the tournament again with the kind of veteran roster that has handled Sun Belt opposition all spring. The Ragin' Cajuns play a brand of baseball that travels and a Friday night matchup with Cincinnati is going to be one of the better 2-vs-3 games.
Lipscomb
ASUN champions. The Bisons won their conference tournament to claim the auto bid. Short trip from Nashville to Starkville keeps them fresh, and the program has been in this kind of one-bid spot before. The 4 seed playing the SEC host on Friday is a familiar position.
What's at stake
Mississippi State is the favorite, but Cincinnati and Louisiana are both the kind of opponents who can win a regional on the road. The 2-vs-3 Friday matchup between Cincinnati and Louisiana is going to be the most contested game of the weekend, and the winner has a real chance against the Bulldogs.
Louisiana's pedigree under Matt Deggs makes them dangerous. The Cajuns have been to regionals before and know how to win in this format. A Friday win over Cincinnati would set up a Saturday matchup against Mississippi State that could be tighter than the seeding suggests.
The super regional pairing with the Athens winner adds intrigue. A Mississippi State vs Georgia super regional would pit Brian O'Connor's debut Bulldogs against Wes Johnson's third-year Bulldogs in one of the more compelling SEC super regional matchups, with Georgia heavily favored to host if they win their regional.
