[ Regional Preview · No. 4 Overall Seed ]

The Auburn Regional

Auburn enters the regional as the No. 4 overall seed and a SEC season that survived the toughest schedule in the country. UCF and NC State both have wins on their resumes that put them above their seed. Milwaukee plays in their first NCAA Tournament since 1990.

Host: Auburn (No. 4 Overall) Venue: Plainsman Park Dates: May 29 to June 1

The setup

Auburn is 38-19 with the No. 3 RPI in the country, a top-four national seed earned the hard way. The Tigers played the toughest schedule in college baseball this season, eight regular-season opponents in the field of 64, and still ended up hosting at Plainsman Park. Butch Thompson has the Tigers ready for the weekend.

UCF arrives as a two seed at 31-21 with a Big 12 resume that was uneven but produced enough quality wins to land here. The Knights celebrated wildly during the selection show, and they have every right to. Their pitching depth has been quietly building all spring. NC State at 32-22 squeezed in as one of the final at-large bids, giving Elliott Avent one last regional weekend in his 30th and final season as head coach.

Milwaukee at 25-31 is the Horizon League auto bid winner and the bracket's biggest underdog by record. The Panthers earned their way here by playing their best baseball in the second half of the season. The first NCAA Tournament for the program since 1990.

Rich Wallace's third season at UCF brought the Knights back to the tournament after missing in 2025. UCF's pitching staff caught fire late and the lineup is balanced. The selection show celly captures the program's mood: house money. Lower expectations than NC State by Vegas odds, but the Big 12 schedule prepared them for what's coming Friday.

What's at stake

Auburn's path is the cleanest of the top-four seeds. NC State is the more credentialed threat with their 23 NCAA appearances under Avent and a senior-driven roster looking to send their coach off properly. UCF has the pitching depth to push the Tigers if a starter goes off, but neither matches what Auburn has built. The Tigers should advance and the super regional pairing with the Lincoln winner is going to be must-watch baseball. Auburn would host that super regional, an enormous advantage.

If Auburn wobbles, the bracket gets interesting. NC State has the postseason experience and the emotional motivation of sending Avent out the right way. UCF's pitching gives them a shot in any single game. A double-elimination format means the host needs to win the games they should and not lose to a Friday night setback.

The Lincoln-Auburn super regional pairing is the strongest of the eight. Both regionals have multiple realistic winners, and the road super regional that emerges from Lincoln is going to be playing in front of one of the loudest crowds in the country. Auburn hosting a super regional has the potential to be a generational atmosphere on the Plains.

[ The Venue ]

Plainsman Park

Plainsman Park has been Auburn's home since 1950 with a capacity around 4,096. The covered grandstand and intimate dimensions make for one of the more distinctive atmospheres in the SEC. Auburn has played some of their best baseball at home this season.

[ The take ]

Auburn advances, NC State pushes them to Sunday.

Auburn is the better team and the host. The Tigers handle Milwaukee on Friday, then face whichever NC State or UCF survives Saturday. We have Auburn winning the regional, but NC State's pedigree and the emotional weight of Avent's final ride pushes the championship game to Sunday or Monday. Three top-tier RPIs against each other in tight games.
