[ Regional Preview · No. 9 Overall Seed ]

The Hattiesburg Regional

Southern Miss hosts at Pete Taylor Park as the highest non-power-conference seed in the field. Virginia at 36-21 is the kind of ACC two seed that punches up. Jacksonville State arrives from C-USA. Little Rock claims the Ohio Valley auto bid.

Host: Southern Miss (No. 9 Overall) Venue: Pete Taylor Park Dates: May 29 to June 1

The setup

Southern Miss is the highest non-power-conference seed in the field at No. 9 overall. The Golden Eagles went 44-15 to win the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles, the kind of dominant mid-major resume that puts them in the conversation for hosting every spring. Christian Ostrander's third season as head coach has produced his second consecutive hosting site, the kind of consistency that put the program in the No. 9 overall conversation.

Pete Taylor Park has been one of the loudest small-capacity stadiums in college baseball for years. The Hattiesburg faithful turn out for big series and the regional weekend is going to be a packed house. Mid-major hosting is not common, and Southern Miss takes the opportunity seriously.

Virginia at 36-21 is the kind of ACC two seed that comes from a deep conference and can win in any bracket position. Chris Pollard's first year as head coach, after coming over from Duke last June following Brian O'Connor's departure to Mississippi State, has the Cavaliers right back in the tournament. Jacksonville State at 46-13 is the Conference USA representative with a gaudy record. Little Rock at 36-26 is the Ohio Valley auto bid.

Ohio Valley Conference champions. The Trojans punched the ticket with a tournament run that surprised most observers. A 36-win season suggests there is more here than the record indicates. Short travel to Hattiesburg from across the river will keep their legs fresh.

What's at stake

Southern Miss has the highest non-power-conference seed in the field, but Virginia in the same bracket is the kind of opponent that does not respect that distinction. The Cavaliers know how to win regionals and a 36-21 record undersells how good they have been at their best. The 2-vs-3 between Virginia and Jacksonville State is one of the more compelling Friday undercards.

Jacksonville State's 46-13 record is the kind of number that gets people to look twice at the three seed. If the Gamecocks beat Virginia on Friday, this regional gets very interesting very fast. Mid-major teams stacked against each other for two consecutive days could open up a host path or a road exit.

Little Rock plays the spoiler role with house money. Friday against the No. 9 overall seed at home is a hard ticket to win, but the Trojans' pitching staff has handled some good teams during the OVC slate. Anything is possible in regionals.

[ The Venue ]

Pete Taylor Park

Pete Taylor Park has been Southern Miss' home since 1990 and holds around 4,000 fans with berm seating that can push that higher for big games. The Hattiesburg atmosphere is one of the loudest in mid-major baseball and the regional weekend should be at capacity throughout.

[ The take ]

Jacksonville State takes it out of Hattiesburg.

The SFF Composite has Jacksonville State as the strongest non-host team in this regional, and the PEAR Composite agrees. Southern Miss is hosting but Jax State's pitching depth, regular-season run, and Q1 win profile are the cleanest path to Sunday or Monday. Virginia is a credible threat with its own pitching staff, but the math points at the Gamecocks. Home field at Pete Taylor Park is the wild card we're betting against, and that's the kind of pick that can absolutely look wrong by Sunday night.
