The setup
West Virginia is hosting an NCAA Tournament regional for only the second time in program history, the first since 2019. The Mountaineers finished 39-14 and earned the No. 16 overall seed, the last of the national host seeds. Randy Mazey has WVU back in the regional conversation with the program's best baseball in years.
Kendrick Family Ballpark has been West Virginia's home since 2015 and holds around 3,500 fans. The Morgantown regional weekend is the biggest event in program history outside the 2019 hosting weekend, and the crowd is going to make the most of it. Mountaineer baseball is having a moment in 2026.
Wake Forest at 38-19 is the kind of ACC two seed that should not be a two seed. Tom Walter has the Demon Deacons in the tournament with a roster that has played one of the toughest schedules in the country. Kentucky at 31-21 brings the SEC pedigree as the three seed. Binghamton at 31-20 claims the America East auto bid.
The teams
West Virginia
Hosting only the second NCAA Tournament regional in program history, the first since 2019. Randy Mazey has West Virginia at 39 wins and a No. 16 overall seed. The Mountaineers survived a strong Big 12 schedule and earned the last hosting position.
Wake Forest
Tom Walter has Wake Forest back in the tournament after the 2023 College World Series run. The Demon Deacons play one of the toughest schedules in the country and a 38-win season reflects the kind of ACC resume that should have been a three seed at most.
Kentucky
Nick Mingione has Kentucky in the tournament with the kind of veteran roster that has handled an SEC schedule. A 31-21 record undersells how the Wildcats have played in the second half of the season. A three seed that has done damage in this format before.
Binghamton
America East champions. The Bearcats earned the auto bid with their conference tournament win. A 31-win season and a hot finish to the year keeps Binghamton playing meaningful baseball into late May.
What's at stake
Wake Forest is the favorite to win this regional and they're not the host. The Demon Deacons have the strongest two seed line in the field outside Lincoln and Eugene, and West Virginia is going to need to play above their seeding to advance. The Friday Wake vs Kentucky matchup is one of the most-watched undercards of the day.
Kentucky has SEC pedigree and a roster that handled SEC opposition all spring. The three seed slot looks like the kind of bracket math that benefits the Wildcats more than the host site. A Friday win over Wake Forest would scramble the regional significantly.
The super regional pairing with the Los Angeles winner means whoever comes out of Morgantown is going to UCLA. That's the kind of road super regional that takes the wind out of host bids quickly, regardless of how well the regional weekend goes.
