The setup
Florida is in its 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament, the longest active streak in the country. Kevin O'Sullivan's program is the gold standard for consistency in college baseball, and the No. 8 overall seed reflects another quality season that produced 39 wins. The Gators are at home in a postseason that they treat as routine business.
Miami is the most accomplished two seed in this bracket and arrived at 38-18 with the kind of resume that could have hosted in a different bracket math. The Canes have a rich postseason history and bring the kind of pitching depth that travels. Their Friday night matchup with Troy is going to be one of the better undercards of the entire opening day.
Troy at 32-29 is the Sun Belt auto bid and a regional regular in recent years. The Trojans punch above their weight in May because their pitching staff has handled a deep Sun Belt slate. Rider claims the MAAC auto bid at 33-18 and brings the auto-bid first-time excitement to Gainesville.
The teams
Florida
Longest active NCAA Tournament streak in the country at 18 consecutive years. Kevin O'Sullivan has Florida in its annual postseason position. A 39-win season including SEC play that survived the toughest conference in the country.
Miami
J.D. Arteaga's third season as Miami's head coach has the Canes back in the postseason as a credible two seed. Four national championships in program history give Miami the kind of pedigree that should not be sitting in a two seed slot. The most accomplished non-host in this regional.
Troy
Sun Belt auto bid earner. Mark Smartt's Trojans handled a tough Sun Belt slate that produced multiple tournament teams. The pitching staff has been the calling card and their bullpen depth gives them a real shot at making Miami uncomfortable in their Friday matchup.
Rider
MAAC champions. The Broncs come to Gainesville off a hot run through their conference tournament. A 33-18 regular season and a postseason path that involved beating the favored conference teams. The MAAC has produced regional spoilers before.
What's at stake
Florida is the favorite to advance, but Miami in the bracket below them is the kind of two seed that has a realistic path. A potential UF vs Miami Sunday final would be the in-state rivalry game that puts Gainesville at its loudest. Both programs have national championship pedigree.
Troy is the dark horse. Sun Belt teams have a habit of showing up in late May playing better baseball than their record suggests, and Troy is no exception. The Trojans' Friday game against Miami is winnable and would scramble the bracket significantly.
The super regional pairing with the Hattiesburg winner adds upside. Florida vs Southern Miss in a super regional would pit the longest active NCAA Tournament streak against the highest non-power-conference seed in the field, two programs separated by a few hours of I-10 with very different paths to get here.
