The setup
UCLA is what a No. 1 overall seed should look like. The Bruins went 51-6 on the season, won both the Big Ten regular season title outright and the conference tournament for the first time ever, and finished as the only team ranked No. 1 from wire-to-wire. John Savage's 22nd season at UCLA produced his 15th NCAA Tournament team and what is almost certainly his most complete one.
The supporting cast at Jackie Robinson Stadium is loaded too. Shortstop Roch Cholowsky won the Brooks Wallace Award as the nation's top shortstop and slugged 23 home runs, the most by a Bruin since 2000. UCLA went 31-7 at home a year ago and the program has had a losing record at Jackie Robinson Stadium just twice in the last 21 seasons. Friday night in Westwood is one of the toughest tickets in college baseball this weekend.
Three teams travel west to take their shot. Virginia Tech is the No. 2 seed at 30-24, a familiar postseason face from the ACC. Cal Poly comes in at 36-22 as the No. 3 with Big West credentials and a lineup that can run with anyone in a short series. Saint Mary's claimed the West Coast Conference auto bid at 34-25.
The teams
UCLA
Wire-to-wire No. 1 in the country. Big Ten regular season and tournament champions. John Savage's 15th NCAA Tournament team at UCLA. Shortstop Roch Cholowsky won the Brooks Wallace Award and slugged 23 home runs. The clear favorite to advance.
Virginia Tech
John Szefc's 9th season at Virginia Tech put the Hokies back in the tournament after missing out in 2025. Solid pitching and an ACC slate that prepared them for the kind of opponent they'll see Friday. The two seed in the regional from the ACC.
Cal Poly
Big West auto bid earner. The Mustangs play their home games at Baggett Stadium and bring a roster that has handled the Big West gauntlet through April and May. A familiar West Coast opponent for UCLA in this bracket position.
Saint Mary's
West Coast Conference champions and back in the NCAA Tournament after going 2-2 in the Corvallis Regional last June. Eric Valenzuela's ninth season at Saint Mary's, with NCAA Tournament appearances in 2016 and 2025 to his credit. The Gaels and Bruins have met once before, with UCLA sweeping a three-game set 14-1 in aggregate.
What's at stake
If you're picking against UCLA at home, you're picking against the betting markets, the rankings, the host advantage, and a coach who has been doing this for 22 years. The Bruins are heavy favorites and should be. The real question for this regional is who survives the bottom half.
Virginia Tech and Cal Poly is a fascinating Friday night matchup. The Hokies have ACC pedigree, the Mustangs have the Big West rhythm. Whoever loses that one almost certainly draws UCLA in an elimination spot on Sunday, which is the kind of week-defining double-elimination weekend that makes regionals special.
Saint Mary's gets the storybook chance to play the No. 1 overall seed on Friday afternoon. A win there would be one of the biggest first-round upsets in tournament history and would scramble the entire bracket.
